Sweet, Cozy & Full of Holiday Flavor

A Comfort Classic, Made Healthier

Some recipes bring back memories the moment they come out of the oven.

The warm aroma of cinnamon and vanilla filling the kitchen. Family gathered around the dinner table. Holiday meals shared with the people you love.

Candied yams have been a comforting favorite for generations. Traditional recipes are often loaded with refined sugar, marshmallows, and heavy syrups, making them delicious but sometimes leaving you feeling overly full or sluggish afterward.

This healthier version keeps everything you love about classic candied yams—the rich buttery glaze, warm spices, and melt-in-your-mouth sweet potatoes—while using more wholesome ingredients and significantly less added sugar.

Naturally sweet sweet potatoes are enhanced with pure maple syrup, a touch of honey, real vanilla, and warm spices to create a beautifully caramelized glaze that’s every bit as comforting.

Whether you’re preparing a holiday feast, Sunday dinner, or simply craving a healthier comfort food, these candied yams prove that nutritious eating doesn’t mean giving up the flavors you love.

Because healthy food should still taste amazing.

⏱ Recipe Details

  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Cook Time: 50–55 minutes
  • Total Time: About 1 hour
  • Servings: 4
  • Difficulty: Easy

🥣 Ingredients

  • 2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into thick rounds or chunks
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (or 2 tbsp butter + 1 tbsp coconut oil)
  • 4 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground ginger (optional but recommended)
  • ⅛ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 teaspoon freshly grated orange zest (optional)

Optional Holiday Finish

  • 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup (drizzled over the top during the final 5 minutes of baking)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1️⃣ Prepare the Oven

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Lightly grease a 9×13-inch glass baking dish.

Arrange the sweet potato slices or chunks evenly in the dish.

2️⃣ Make the Healthy Glaze

In a medium bowl whisk together:

  • Melted butter
  • Maple syrup
  • Honey
  • Vanilla extract
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Ginger
  • Salt
  • Orange juice
  • Water
  • Orange zest (if using)

The glaze should be smooth, glossy, and easy to pour.

3️⃣ Coat the Sweet Potatoes

Pour the glaze evenly over the sweet potatoes.

Gently toss until every piece is coated.

Try to spread the glaze throughout the dish so it can caramelize while baking.

4️⃣ Bake

Cover tightly with aluminum foil.

Bake for 30 minutes.

Remove the foil.

Carefully stir the potatoes.

Spoon some of the glaze from the bottom of the dish over the potatoes.

Return to the oven uncovered and bake for another 20–25 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are fork tender and beautifully caramelized.

Halfway through the uncovered baking time, spoon the glaze over the potatoes once more to create an extra glossy finish.

Optional: During the last 5 minutes, drizzle 1 tablespoon of maple syrup over the potatoes for an extra rich holiday glaze.

5️⃣ Serve

Remove from the oven.

Let rest for about 5 minutes.

Spoon the warm glaze over the potatoes before serving.

Enjoy warm.
